About Us

At the Society for Animals in Distress (SAID), we’re more than just a veterinary care provider—we’re a movement for change. Dedicated to improving the lives of animals and people alike, we bring professional veterinary care to pets and working animals in low- to no-income communities, ensuring they receive the help they deserve.

But our mission doesn’t stop there. We believe in building a kinder, more empathetic world from the ground up. That’s why we focus on educating foundation-phase children, planting the seeds of empathy and compassion for animals at an early age. By shaping young hearts and minds, we’re paving the way for a brighter future—one where care, respect, and responsibility define the relationship between humans and animals.

Powered by the generosity of donors, innovative income streams, our dedicated staff and, a passionate network of volunteers, SAID delivers life-changing services that create lasting impact. Every service we provide is guided by our commitment to excellence and tailored to the resources available, ensuring we maximize our ability to uplift both animals and the communities we serve.

Vision

Our Vision is to co-create a world where communities and animals thrive together through a shared commitment to One Health and One Welfare – fostering healthier, more resilient lives for all through compassion, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.

Mission

The Society for Animals in Distress partners with communities to nurture One Health and One Welfare principles, providing access to veterinary care, education, and animal welfare initiatives that enhance animal health and human well-being while promoting environmental stewardship. Together, we cultivate a compassionate and sustainable future through collaboration, understanding, and mutual support.

What This Means

At SAID, we believe that animal wellbeing, human wellbeing, and environmental health are deeply interconnected. When one thrives, all thrive. This approach is known as One Health and One Welfare — a global framework that recognises that caring for animals strengthens families, communities, public health, and long-term environmental resilience.

In practice, this means:

  • Bringing accessible veterinary care directly into underserved communities

  • Providing education and practical support that empowers owners to make informed, compassionate decisions

  • Reducing preventable suffering by ensuring early intervention, preventative care, and responsible pet ownership

  • Strengthening community wellbeing through programmes that build empathy, responsibility, and safer environments

  • Promoting environmental stewardship that supports healthy ecosystems for animals and people

Our work is not charity; it is partnership.
It is co-creation.
It is the shared journey toward a healthier, more compassionate society.

The 5 Domains

How the Five Domains Guide Our Work

The Five Domains of Animal Welfare provide a modern, internationally recognised framework that helps us evaluate and improve the wellbeing of every animal we serve. They ensure that animal welfare is not only about survival, but about quality of life.

Here’s how each domain is integrated into SAID’s daily work:

We ensure animals have access to proper, species-appropriate food and clean water.

From feeding programmes to owner education, we help animals maintain healthy body condition and prevent malnutrition, dehydration, and diet-related disease.

We address the living conditions animals experience — including shelter, shade, safety, comfort, and clean surroundings.

Whether it’s coaching owners on safe housing, repairing harnesses, or cleaning coal yards and community spaces, we work to create environments that support wellbeing.

We provide professional veterinary care, including vaccinations, sterilisations, parasite control, emergency support, equine dentistry, farrier care, and chronic condition management.

Our mobile clinics, hospital, and outreach programmes ensure animals receive the care they need to prevent and relieve suffering.

Animals thrive when they are able to express natural behaviours.

We support this through responsible housing, correct tack, enrichment guidance, humane handling, and education that empowers owners to understand animal body language and behaviour.

A good life includes positive emotional experiences — comfort, security, confidence, and the absence of fear, stress, and pain.

Every interaction at SAID is grounded in compassionate care, reducing stress and ensuring that animals feel safe, respected, and understood.

The Impact

By anchoring our work in One Health, One Welfare, and the Five Domains, SAID creates meaningful, sustainable impact:

  • Animals experience healthier, safer, more dignified lives

  • Communities gain skills, knowledge, and confidence

  • Children learn empathy, responsibility, and non-violence

  • Public health improves through vaccination, parasite control, and reduced zoonotic risk

  • Environments become cleaner and safer for both people and animals

This is how we build a future where animals and people thrive together.
